Solution 3: Using Windows PowerShell

Windows PowerShell is a powerful tool that can be used to repair many common Windows errors. Follow the steps outlined below.

  • Enter the following commands after they have been typed.

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

  • Open PowerShell by searching for it in the start menu –>Windows PowerShell.

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

  • By default, there is a policy assigned that prevents power shell scripts from running. By typing the above-mentioned command, you will be able to Unrestrict the Execution policy.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like “*SystemApps*”} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

  • Paste the above-mentioned command and hit enter, Once the command executed restart the system once.

This will open the Run command, where you can type PowerShell and press Enter.

Type the following cmdlet in the PowerShell prompt. $manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + ‘\AppxManifest.xml’ ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest

  • After running the command, exit PowerShell and restart the system to see if the problem has been resolved; otherwise, proceed to the next solution.

Solution 5: Relaunch the language bar.

The majority of users reported that this issue occurs after a Windows update. The absence of the language bar is the primary cause of the Can’t Type Anything in Search Bar error. To enable the language bar, follow the steps outlined below.

  • Press Windows + R, this will open the Run command.

Type the Following path in the run command field and hit enter.  “C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe”

Enter this without the quotation marks. On Windows, this file is located in the system32 folder. The Microsoft process Ctfmon manages Alternative User Input and the Office Language bar. If this file/service is not running, the problem may appear. Running this file restores the Language bar, which resolves the issue.

Note: Some users reported that after using this method, the search bar worked fine but that after rebooting, the issue reappeared, so we need to make some registry changes to make this method permanent. First, after using the aforementioned method, reboot and see if the problem reappears. If it does, simply follow the steps outlined below.

  • Press Windows + X and choose command prompt admin.

Type the Following command in the command prompt and hit enter. REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v ctfmon /t REG_SZ /d CTFMON.EXE

  • Restart the system once and check the issue is reappearing or not.

Solution 6: Restart the Cortana Process

When you start the system, Cortana will start automatically, and this type of issue can also be caused by the Cortana process, because the Cortana process can stop and go into a non-responsive state. So, from the task manager, locate the Cortana Process and stop it.

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Del and choose Task manager
  • Click on the process tab and search for Cortana.
